Tom Hanks Has a Coffee Brand — and It’s Already on Clearance at Walmart for $4

Tom Hanks has done a lot in his career.

He’s won back-to-back Best Actor Oscars. He voiced Woody. He outran a volleyball-related mental breakdown on a deserted island. He’s made America cry over a shrimp boat, a toy cowboy, a death row mouse, and an entire box of chocolates.

And, according to a bag on a clearance shelf at Walmart, he also runs a coffee company.

A photo making the rounds online this week shows bags of Hanks For Our Troops coffee — medium and dark roast, Hanks’ face smiling out from the front of each — marked down to $4. Original price: $11.96.

If you had no idea any of this existed, you’re not alone. That appears to be most of the internet’s reaction.

Wait — Tom Hanks Actually Has a Coffee Brand?

Yes. He’s had one for a while.

Hanks launched the brand back in November 2022, originally under the cheekier wordplay name Hanx For Our Troops(Hanx, Hanks, thanks — get it?). It was sold direct-to-consumer at givehanks.com, where a 12-ounce bag of First Class Joe ran $16. From day one, Hanks pitched it as a way to support veterans and their families, with 100% of net profits routed to four partner nonprofits: the Bob Woodruff Foundation, Headstrong, Hire Heroes USA, and Student Veterans of America.

In 2025, the company quietly rebranded from the winking “HANX” to the much more literal “HANKS” — in other words, a rare case of a celebrity brand deciding its own gimmick was too subtle — and landed on Walmart.com.

Then, in February 2026, Hanks For Our Troops announced its biggest move yet: a full rollout into nearly 1,700 Walmart stores across the country. Medium roast. Dark roast. Chocolate turtle-flavored pods. On actual shelves, in actual communities. It was pitched as the brand’s first nationwide brick-and-mortar expansion and tied to America’s 250th birthday this summer.

That was two months ago.

Those same bags are now $4.

An Oscar Winner’s Coffee, in the Clearance Bin

To be fair, clearance doesn’t automatically mean “flop.” Retailers rotate stock constantly, price down slow-moving SKUs, and clear shelf space for whatever’s coming next. This is especially common with new-to-retail food and beverage launches, where brands often get aggressively priced down in early months to drive trial. A few bags of Tom Hanks coffee sitting on one Walmart’s clearance rack doesn’t mean the whole brand is sinking.

But it does raise the obvious question — the one that made this photo go viral in the first place: how is it possible that a new coffee brand, backed by one of the most beloved and recognizable movie stars alive, appears to be a rounding error in the snack aisle?

Because this isn’t some D-list reality personality trying to move a $40 candle. This is Tom Hanks. This is a man so famous that his off-brand USB-C charger could probably command Super Bowl ad money. If he fully leaned into this brand — a late night swing, a single SNL sketch, an Instagram Reel of him making a cup of it at 5 a.m. — Hanks For Our Troops would sell out by lunch.

Instead, for more than three years, the brand has quietly existed at the edge of the Tom Hanks cinematic universe, largely unknown to anyone who wasn’t specifically looking for it.

Why Coffee, Though?

If you were trying to guess Tom Hanks’ eventual consumer product line, coffee probably isn’t first on the list. Typewriters, sure. A collection of chunky reading glasses. A podcast where he just talks to strangers about handwritten letters. A meticulously curated line of beige outerwear.

But coffee actually makes more sense than it first seems. Hanks is a noted coffee obsessive — one of the brand’s original recipes, Tom’s Morning Magic Blend, was specifically inspired by his childhood memories of drinking coffee with milk and a dash of chocolate malt. And the charitable mission dovetails neatly with what’s been a through-line of his career, from Saving Private Ryan to Forrest Gump to Band of Brothers to Greyhound: a sustained interest in the lives of American veterans.

It is, in other words, a very Tom Hanks brand. Unflashy. Earnest. Practical. Built around a cause rather than a quick cash grab. No neon bottles. No adaptogens. No pastel “wellness” lifestyle aesthetic. Just a bag of coffee and a promise that the money goes somewhere good.

So What Gives?

The most likely explanation isn’t scandal or failure — it’s marketing.

Hanks For Our Troops has spent most of its life as a low-profile, direct-to-consumer brand with a minimal marketing footprint. Even the major 1,700-store Walmart rollout earlier this year barely registered outside of beverage-industry press. There’s no big splashy ad campaign. There’s no Hanks talk-show blitz. There’s not even a particularly active social account. The brand’s own site, to its credit, focuses more on the nonprofits it supports than on its own marketing.

Celebrity brands live or die on awareness. You can slap Tom Hanks’ face on a product, but if no one knows the product exists, even Tom Hanks can’t move inventory. The $4 clearance tag isn’t a verdict on the coffee — it’s a verdict on the go-to-market.

Final Sip

In a celebrity-branding landscape crowded with tequilas, skincare lines, hydration powders, and supplement gummies, Tom Hanks quietly releasing a coffee brand whose entire profit stream goes to military veterans may be the most Tom Hanks thing imaginable.

It’s understated. It’s mission-driven. It’s weirdly hard to find.

And based on that price sticker, America is apparently still in the process of figuring out it’s there.
