A piece of concept art from 2015 is making people cry on X this week, and it is easy to see why. It shows Bo Peep in a gown nobody ever saw in a finished film, a storybook confection of peach tulle and soft turquoise bows, sketched back when Toy Story 4 was going to be a very different movie. The art has floated around for years, but a fresh viral post pulled millions of new eyes to it, with one fan summing up the mood: Toy Story 4 was supposed to be a romantic comedy, this Bo design is unbelievably good, and it is far too late to ever make that version now.
Here is the thing, though. That viral lament is not a fan myth. It is true. Toy Story 4 really was conceived as a romantic comedy, and the version we got is a near-total rewrite of it.
The love story that was
When Pixar announced the fourth film back in 2014, John Lasseter, then the studio’s creative chief, was directing, and he was upfront about the plan. This one would be a love story. Pixar president Jim Morris went further and called it a flat-out romantic comedy, adding that it would not even be a continuation of Toy Story 3. The pitch was simple and sweet: Woody and Buzz set out on a journey to find Bo Peep and bring her home. The script came from Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, writers with real rom-com instincts.
That is the era this dress comes from. The 2015 design, by Pixar artist Daniela Strijleva, was built around romance. The artist has explained that the florals were chosen as symbols, forget-me-nots for Bo’s bond with Woody, field daisies woven through a softened palette where the character’s usual pink and blue melted into peach and aged turquoise. It is a costume designed for a courtship.
What happened to it
Then the movie changed almost completely. In 2016, Josh Cooley took over as director and re-conceived the entire story. Jones and McCormack departed the project. Stephany Folsom and Andrew Stanton rewrote it. Lasseter left Pixar in 2018. The release slipped from 2017 to 2019.
Crucially, Cooley reframed why Bo even comes back. It was no longer just about rekindling a romance. Bo’s life as a lost toy became a mirror for Woody’s deepest fear, that a toy can outlive its purpose, and her freedom became the thing that forces him to rethink his whole identity. The romance stayed, but it stopped being the point.
It worked. The Toy Story 4 that reached theaters in 2019 won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature and grossed over a billion dollars, the highest total in the franchise. Reinventing the movie was, by almost any measure, the right call.
Why fans are mourning anyway
Looking at that gown, though, you understand the ache. The art is a window into a road not taken, a lighter, more openly romantic Toy Story, the kind of swooning Woody-and-Bo love story the franchise flirted with for two films and never quite committed to. There is a whole movie living in that turquoise bow, and we will never see it.
That is the strange gift of unmade films. The version that got made has to survive contact with budgets, rewrites, and test screenings. The version that never got made gets to stay perfect forever, preserved in nothing but a handful of gorgeous drawings and a maquette. The Toy Story 4 we received is probably the better film. The rom-com we imagine around this dress gets to be flawless precisely because no one ever had to actually make it.
